A course on care for health journalists
The movement for care needs a public that is informed about the systemic forces shaping their experiences of health and care.
Journalists are uniquely positioned to report these stories and make these connections. They can ask critical questions, make the realities and burdens of care visible, strengthen transparency and accountability, and foster public understanding and dialogue that can inspire change.
We are looking for journalists and journalism students to join our Foundations of Care course and help us shape a curriculum and pathway to reporting more stories about care. Contact us to learn more and get registered.

Our Foundations of Care course provides a learning experience rooted in storytelling that explores the problems of industrial health care, a definition of careful and kind health care for all, a pathway for action, and a community of practice.
Journalists will have the opportunity to…
Explore how the language and framework of industrial care and careful and kind care can help journalists report on vital, under-told, people-centered stories
Practice using patient, caregiver, and clinician stories to understand the conditions for care
Identify and report a story using the concepts shared in the course (A “Mini-Revolution”)

Our cohorts reflect the diverse perspectives of people from across the healthcare continuum, including professional expertise and personal lived experiences. You will be in a cohort along with patients, caregivers, clinicians, educators, researchers, and others - as well as other journalists.
The course is offered online so is accessible to people from all over the world with many different lived experiences. In each module;
Learners contribute personal reflections, stories, and interact virtually with one another.
A Community Call convenes learners together in a “live” call to build community and explore topics more in depth that are of interest to the group.
Near the end of the course, each learner also has a 1:1 coaching session as they map out their proposed Mini- Revolution.

The Foundations of Care experience takes about 10 hours spread out over four weeks. The cohort starts and finishes in sync, but learners are invited to complete the modules on their own time, contributing to the online community conversation as they move through the material.

This program for health journalists and journalism students is offered free of charge thanks to a grant from the Hubbard Broadcasting Foundation.
The standard individual Foundations of Care experience - 4 facilitated modules, community call, and 1:1 coaching session - is offered on a sliding fee scale from $0-200/per person.
